Thank you, Nikki Lee and Jessica Callahan, for your thoughtful replies on how to assist families with rooming in, hospital interruptions and rest. Jessica, your account of a postpartum day is exhausting and all too accurate! Of course you are right, that families in the hospital endure unrelenting interruptions throughout their stay, and I agree that the place to start is in protecting their rest and family time to begin with, helping them avoid getting to the point where they'll "do anything" to get a bit of rest. Our hospital initiated a quiet time from 2-4 in the afternoon 2 years ago, during which time visitors and staff are limited. Most of our families are so grateful for that time! We have not tracked whether that change affected the number of requests or offers to take babies out for awhile at night, but I would be curious to see. We will continue with efforts to be proactive on this issue. We are working on an admission teaching video that will include teaching on rooming in and letting families know that in most instances nurses can provide assistance and education on calming and caring for baby's needs in the room. We will also be doing some re-education with our nurses on teaching the 5 S's, skin to skin, and clustering care. Thanks again for your thoughts on where to place the emphasis.
