Aloha everyone,

I hope to get some info for a mom. She went to the doctor who diagnosed a
breast infection on her right side. Her child only nurses on the left side.
It has been over a year since the child has nursed on the affected side.
Isn't this a bit late for an infection? Mom had a slight fever, doctor said
her breast was radiating heat--no streaks or lumps.

This is mom's second breastfed child, now a toddler. Child gave up nursing
on the right side at about 6 months old. First child did the same.

I know that some children tend to prefer one side to another and may even
give up nursing on one side, but the fact that both children did the same,
and now the breast infection after a year without any nursing on the affected
side has me concerned as well as the mom. Is there cause for more concern?
Should she have a more thorough exam?

Thanks for any information you may have.

Aloha,
Gloria Thai Honolulu, O'ahu, Hawai'i about 20 degrees N of the equator
