Please advise her that she should talk with her Rabbi. It is against the
Jewish law to fast in this type of situation. A nursing mother is REQUIRED
to eat for nourishment for her and her infant. Age, medical needs, medically
required nourishment, nursing mothers and children are required under
Talmudic law to partake in eating and any requisite medicines (including
vitamins). To fast in this situation would endanger the health and welfare
of both the infant and the mother.
If she has further issues, and doesn't have a Rabbi, she should contact the
local Lubavitch or Chabbad Rabbi.

Subject: how should a nursing mother prepare to fast on Yom Kippur?

I have a doula client who gave birth a week ago and is planning to fast on
Yom Kippur. She intends to stay in bed all day with her nursling to
conserve energy, but asked me whether there was anything she could eat or
drink before the fast to make it easier on her. Someone suggesting loading
up on PowerAde (a sports drink). Any other ideas?

Happy New Year to those of you who celebrate.

Thanks,
