Hi to all-
As of 18 months ago, I am a hospital based LC. My institution adopted
Standard Precautions a few years back, which requires gloves for contact
with any body fluid. This includes human breast milk. Before taking my
current job I worked for 10 years at a birth center where we followed
Universal Precautions, which according to my latest read of CDC statements,
do not require health workers to glove for contact with human milk or while
assisting moms to breastfeed. I have continued NOT to glove, except when
assisting small fragile premies, and feel conflicted about practicing
outside of my hospital's protocol, especially since I regularly orient new
staff to lactation and mentor students. I would like to tackle having this
protocol changed, and need information to do so.

I would love to hear from other hospital based LCs about how they practice
with respect to this issue. Please respond to me personally as well as
posting to the list.
thanks in advance from
