Jay asks: Am I wrong about BFing with an RR of 70+??

Thanks.

My experience after many years of working with babies with TTN is if the baby
is in too much respiratory distress to breastfeed, he just plain won't do it.
I'm talking, of course, about term babies here. There is no danger in putting
a baby to breast with a respiratory rate of 70 if he's breathing easily
without grunting, flaring or retracting. The volume of colostrum is low anyway and
I've never seen one of these babies aspirate. I have seen them just plain not
suck if respiratory rate is too fast. Bottle feeding can be dangerous with a
baby with a rapid resp. rate, however, because often baby can't regulate flow
and people try to overfeed babies in the early days when bottle feeding.
Breastfeeding should be safe and beneficial for this baby.
