Hi and Happy New Year to everyone!

I'd like to share some good (positive) news that's recently been mentioned
in a few US publications such as *Family Circle.* Over the holidays I picked
up
3 women's magazines that had published articles re: baby and child care. 2
discussed ear infections and mentioned that breastfeeding reduces the risk
of infection. One had an article on early postpartum discharge and mentioned
breastfeeding without last year's horror stories, and then referred readers
to another page which included an inset titled "What Your Doctor Doesn't
Know About Breastfeeding." It described a survey which revealed that
two-thirds of doctors were misinformed about breastfeeding. It then directed
readers to contact La Leche League for information/advice. Guess they
didn't realize LLL was a dangerous cult, huh? ;)

Another bit of good news - the 1996 edition of *Prevention Report*, from the
U.S. Public Health Service, was circulated at my health center. This report
lists all the 1996 National Health Observances (like American Heart Month,
etc)
and, for the first time I've noticed, listed *World Breastfeeding Week.* It
directs
people to WABA and LLLI for written materials. I hope all you folks who have
worked so hard to get breastfeeding recognized as a valuable resource will
give yourselves a BIG PAT on the back. You're true heroes and you've made
incredible progress in a relatively short period of time. Thanks for all
you've
done to help moms and babies.

Starting 1996 with a smile,
