Carol,
Your question reminds me of a young mom who came to see me with her
midwife last year. Her right breast was gloriously producing, but the
left breast left the baby frustrated. Inspection of the breast showed
markedly different tissue in the quadrant below one of her nipple
piercings, and the quadrant above another piercing on that same breast. 
I could only conclude that there had been damage of some sort that was
precluding production...I too thought of nerve damage, since that kind
of involution within the first week just didn't seem to make sense if it
was a ductal block.

(And I remember looking at Lactnet to see what others had said, so
here's my contribution!)

On another note - I just got accepted into the Masters Program at Union
Institute/Vermont College - my burning question involves Post Traumatic
Stress, birth and breastfeeding...And Kathleen Kendall Tackett has
agreed to be my advisor. Wahoo!
