It is my understanding that babies do not actually grow in a
straight-line fashion, but rather in a series of steps where in between
the steps the line would be level or just on a very slight incline.  The
extra calories are only needed for a short time while the "spurt" is
actually taking place and thereafter, the calorie needs would be the same
as they were before or maybe very slightly higher.  I would also be
interested in knowing how peds and office nurses advise moms of ABM-fed
babies as to how much their babies should be eating and whether or not
they notice these spurts as well?
