Gall bladder surgery is very common post partum and the culprit in
causing the decreased milk supply may be something given by the
anesthesiologist.  They use a whole arsenal of drugs to keep a patient
in an optimal state of unconsciousness during the surgery.  Laporoscopic
procedures have shortened the length of anesthesia, but patients are
still intubated and given meds to control secretions during the
procedure.  The anesthesiologist needs to be aware of the side effects
of what is given in regards to breastfeeding.  The meds given to 'dry
up' oral secretions may also cause a decrease in milk supply and the
anesthesiologist may be unaware or feel there is an overriding need for
the patient's safety.

I had one surgeon who mediated with the anesthesiologist to meet the
patients needs and concerns very well.  I also had a surgeon who told me
that he absolutely would not make any suggestions as to how an
anesthesiologist handled the patient!  Team work at its best and worst!
