Susan,
Some women have found that milk can be transferred even if the surgery has
cut all the ducts (sometimes the nipple is completed removed in breast
reduction surgery). Possibly, the ducts have re-connected. So it is
worthwhile iniatiating breastfeeding and see what happens. She may need to
use a supplemental system at the breast, but you can probably wait and see
in the first few days. It is important, of course, to try to make sure the
baby goes to the breast early in postpartum period and to try to avoid
engorgement.
Lisa Amir, who has also been laughed at in the past for saying that
breastfed babies were smarter.
