"How was the quality of breastfeeding in the research suggesting that formula
is better?"

No-one (especially me) is saying that formula is "better" - it just reduces
bilirubin faster! As nature put bilirubin there for one or several reasons
(one of which could be for its anti-oxidant properties), I have always
assumed that the OPTIMALLY breastfed infant is the norm. Unfortunately, in
the USA (and many other parts of the world as well), very few infants are
breastfed as nature intended, with resultant bilirubin levels above the norm,
and sometimes in dangerous levels. I end every lecture on jaundice and
breastfeeding with:
"Artificially-fed infants are HYPObilirubinemic"
