Hi Anne,
I give out a handout that was designed by the HMO I work for. In this hand out
there is a chart for marking off number of feedings in a day, wets and
stools. There is also descriptions of the numbers that are expected each day
for the first week.
I really encourage moms to use this because it does give them that
quantitative feeling the baby is getting enough and it helps me to get a
clearer picture when I talk to them and not to try and recall with a sleep
deprived brain. Also in this handout is the descriptions of feeding cues
which I circle and emphasize what they are to look for to get in the 8-12
fdgs/day.

I also find myself showing parents how to massage on my own breast. I will
also point out things on mom's breast with permission to touch and then I will
use hands, finger and arms to describe amount of pressure for massage,
elongating of the nipple, ect. If I sense anyone is uncomfortable I will
stop and use mom as the model.
