This is a year to be thankful - for the mom I'm writing below - but I turn
to you for help, also!

I would like information, especially examples and possible physician
resources for a mom whose baby had NEC (Necrotizing enterocolitis) and has
short bowel syndrome. As this baby is a twin, her twin sister has been
exclusively breastfed but she has been on TPN (Total Perenteral Nutrition)
taking NOTHING by mouth for months.

Just last week they learned that there was more intestine left that was
expected, and because it was blocked it has swollen and may be able to cut
it lengthwise then attach it to itself thereby doubling its 10 inches to
almost 20. This is still short, but a lot better than they thought - which
was that the baby would require an intestinal transplant because the TPN
would eventually affect her liver.

I've been communicating to the grandmother - so I asked if mom was still
breastfeeding, and upon hearing that she was, I suggested that perhaps the
breast milk, with its growth factors and enzymes, might be helpful in
maturing and developing this intestine optimally.

I was asked by the mom for some references to give their gastroenterologist
- so I come to you for help!
