While contamination risk with "pre-owned" pumps may be theoretical, pump
"poop-out" is not. As several have noted, personal pumps are not designed to
last forever. But, IME, pump poop-out is not always easy to figure out. With
one fairly popular brand, a number of mothers have reported that the pump
sounded and felt the same, or close to it, when it was no longer working
effectively as when it was. Unfortunately, milk production was compromised
or mom developed extreme engorgement and/or plugged ducts and/or mastitis by
the time someone figured out the pre-owned pump was the likely cause of the
problem. (In some cased that "someone" was the LC who was finally called --
not the moms. The moms assumed the problem must be something with them/their
bodies.) One can only speculate how many mothers wean unnecessarily when
production decreases or they develop lactation-related problems without ever
thinking it may be the pump...
