30 hours? Fantastic! We were allowed to plan a similar training program and
planned about 6 hours. Mgmt cut us down to 2.5 hours. That's all the time
they could afford because the RNs were on paid time during our seminars.

We did use a Needs Assessment Questionnaire (but it's at work now). The RNs
frequently worked together on them. Some came to us to discuss a question
or two, brightened up when they got the answer, and ran off to complete
their papers.  :-D   Well, the idea was to learn.

My suggestion: Once the training is relatively complete, have them document
in the chart what they did to help the mom and how much time they spent
doing it. Usually it's 5 to 20 min for education or direct assist with
position / latch. If there's no success, that's when they refer to the LC.
But it's what you see in the chart that tells what knowledge they have
internalized and actually practice.

This info helps you know what's been done, what may need to be clarified, &
helps you complement and further educate the RN, if that was actually
necessary. I see them beam a big smile when they help a mom begin to BF,
when a few months earlier, they had no clue how to do it. And I'm hearing
less and less of "Feed on both breasts for 15 minutes before offering a
bottle."

Funny exchange one day:
One mom heard that "15-15-bottle" instruction and flatly said, "No!"
RN said, "Yes! 15 - 15," indicating each breast.
Mom again said, "No! 20 - 20 and no bottle!"
All was in Spanglish with gestures, but clearly this mom knew what she was
doing.
