staff
bestowed
the name Joey on the newborn in honor the Joseph of the Christmas
story. Joey
was bottle fed by Young's grandchildren. Young's daughter supplied
breastmilk
for Joey until a surrogate goat mother could be found.

This fall, as I was in a Target parking lot, talking to a woman about
cup feeding her son when she returned to work, I heard a high pitched
squeak. I looked down, and there on the ground below where a car had
been moments before, was a baby rodent, barely beyond pinky stage. I
picked the baby up, finished talking to the mom, and got in my car,
and on the phone to call my husband and ask him to locate the local
wildlife rescue. As I pulled away, my oil pan became dislodged, so my
dh had two tasks for me. While I was waiting for him to call me back
I inspected the baby, and it was clearly dehydrated, so of course I
nursed it. Dribbled milk into it's mouth. My daughters were
fascinated! Finally DH found a mechanic, I drove there, and one of
the owners has raised many baby rodents. I didn't have time to take
the pup to anyone that night so I put her on a heating pad in a bowl
by our bed, offered breastmilk a few times and that baby slept through
the night. The next day, after another breastmilk feed I brought the
pup in, told 'em what I'd fed her and told them I didn't think their
suggestion of water only was a good idea. The pup looked great by then.
