Help needed! I have permission to post from a mom with a one month old
baby. Two weeks ago she began to have persistant/frequent breast pain
after feedings. Not the shooting pains from ductal refilling or yeast. She
describes the pain as "cramping" of both breasts simultaneously, causing
excruciating pain lasting for approximately 1 minute. It is random, although
usually around an hour after feedings, and she can not think of any
precipitating factors. Upon further discussion she revealed that she is
pumping exclusively and feeding EBM by bottle (babe would not latch at birth,
mom returning to work at 6 weeks, decided it was not worth pursuing direct
feeding). She is using a M****a breast pump and her letdown is not usually
uncomfortable. She pumps every 2.5 hours and gets 12 ounces of milk. We
discussed ways to decrease milk supply since she is overproducing to see if
that helps, and taking an OTC anti-inflammatory. She breastfed her first
without difficulty. She did have a couple of breast biopsies prior to first child,
but no new trauma or surgery between children. She denies any signs of
vasospasm or muscle strain with pumping. I need help from all the wise ones
out there--anyone ever have a mom with cramping of the breasts
simultaneously which she compares to the pain of an intense leg cramp?
Obviously I have searched the books and archives without success. If anyone
can offer an explaination or treatment this mom and lactation consultant would
be very grateful. TIA,

Jan in Indiana where winter will arrive all too soon!
