Just as parents need facts before they choose to endanger their baby's
health by feeding him formula if breastmilk is available, so they also
need to know that circumcision is also a choice that they make that
can endanger their child and is in most cases an unnecessary
mutilation of a perfectly normal and  healthy penis. We do not cut
normal, healthy pieces of skin from anyone else's body. Why should our
sons be subjected to this unnecessary operation simply for an outdated
aesthetic ideal or irrational hygiene concern.
In Australia this operation is not done in hospital on newborn
children. (in my experience.) The recommendation is that if the
parents request that it be done, then they should wait until the child
is 6 months old and it should be done by a surgeon, under general
anaesthetic. This goes some way toward letting the parents know that
it is not a 'simple snip'. Parents then need to take some
responsibility for the decision and the outcomes.
My favourite Paediatrician is Jewish and his sons are not circumcised.
This made a big statement!
