Philippine Schools Open Their Doors to Synchronized
Breastfeeding Worldwide

Two
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) have mobilized the
Philippines’ Department of Education to host this year’s Synchronized
Breastfeeding Worldwide (SBW). Education Secretary Jesli Lapus instructed all public
and private school administrators to prepare their schools as sites of this
event slated on October 2, at 10 a.m. local time.

Lapus
noted that by doing so, their graduates, the future parents of the Philippines
will be educated on the critical importance of breastfeeding to the economy, to
the ecology and to the family.

The education
chief also encouraged teachers to breastfeed to create a strong message among
school children that women can work and breastfeed at the same time. “It is a
vivid image to our children that breastfeeding is the norm in child care,” he
explained.

Now
on its third year, Synchronized Breastfeeding Worldwide was initiated
by Dr. Elvira L.
Henares-Esguerra, Children for Breastfeeding, Inc. (CfB) and Nona D. Andaya-Castillo,
Nurturers of the Earth Philippines. In partnership with the World
Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, the Philippine-initiated global event mobilized more than 10,000
mother-child pairs in 16 countries in 2007.

In
this year’s SBW event, organizers plan to challenge five Guinness World
Records: Simultaneous Breastfeeding (1) in a Single Site and (2) in
Multiple Sites; (3) Simultaneous Massage in a Single Site and (4) in Multiple
Sites and (5) Most Number of Guinness Records won in a Single Event. In 2006, they organized and bagged the
Guinness World Record for Simultaneous Breastfeeding in a Single Site and in
2007, the first Guinness Record on Simultaneous Breastfeeding in Multiple Sites
to educate mothers en masse on the benefits of breastfeeding and the hazards of
formula feeding.

Esguerra said that “the event will
instill among our children to care and support pregnant and breastfeeding
mothers as a way of life”. Her organization started this campaign to perform Acts
of Kindness to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to instill social
consciousness and responsibility among children. “Boys and girls will imbibe
the biological truth that foremost, the breasts are for nurturing and that they
should respect women who were given this privilege by our Creator,” she added.

Castillo described that “as children
watch mothers breastfeed simultaneously, they will witness the peace and bliss
that breastfeeding brings”. She added that “they will listen to the prayer of
thanksgiving for motherhood and breastmilk, a powerful spiritual and
educational tool on responsible parenthood”.
