Anyone holding the IBCLC credential has agreed to be subject to the decisions of IBLCE on whether they are fit to continue calling themselves an IBCLC. At the IBLCE website you can read about how to proceed if you are concerned that an IBCLC is not practicing in accordance with professional standards. If someone gets their credential revoked, IBLCE has the responsibility to make it known so the person may not continue to call themselves 'internationally board certified' nor to enjoy any privileges dependent on such status.

It's been asked how one can pass the exam if they advocate methods that appear to be completely at odds with current knowledge. Easy - if you check the correct answer on the required number of items to pass, you pass. No one can check out whether you actually believe it, or whether you intend to practice in accordance with it. That monitoring is up to the rest of the world. Women seeking help are ill-served if bad practice is condoned by the very people who really do know better and it reduces the value of the IBCLC title too. When someone puts their professional practice out for scrutiny on the internet, they would seem to be saying 'this is what I stand for as an IBCLC'. Be aware that this also applies to what you post on Lactnet. If a formal complaint is made and the act can be shown to be in conflict with the standards for IBCLCs, they will be subject to the procedures described in this document:

I strongly urge all of you who are IBCLCs to familiarize yourselves with the content, since it applies to us all. If you are aware of someone who may be unfit to practice and say nothing, you have not fulfilled your responsibility either. Sticky and uncomfortable? You bet - but it's what you agreed to when you certified with IBLCE.
