Probably the definition of breastfeeding (in the United States) that is the most easily defended to doubters is simply the current AAP guidelines: Breastfeeding exclusively for six months, continue breastfeeding for AT LEAST one year as other foods are introduced, continue breastfeeding after that for as long as mother and baby mutually desire. This addresses all components of the actual meaning of breastfeeding: initation, exclusivity, and duration.
