Subject: difficult choices, mom who lost baby to bf failure

Wow, what a dilemna.

I think I'd ask her how she would feel about partial breastfeeding...just
to give the baby some antibodies. If she seems at all interested...I'd talk
about how failure with one doesn't mean failure with another and that she
can be closely monitored.

If she insists that she cannot make milk...ask if she has heard of adoptive
moms feeding at the breast....and if she would be interested in SNS feeding
"just for bonding."

Of course all of this has to be handled with the utmost sensitivity...as I
know you are aware. I probably wouldn't ask for a leap of faith...to bf w/o
supplements at all. I'd just approach it as "while formula feeding would
you like to have some of the benefits of breastfeeding for you and your
baby?"

Good luck,
Susan Keith-Hergert RN, MS, CPN, IBCLC
