Hi everyone,
I want to thank all of you who have contributed input over the past 3 weeks.
No one person could answer all my questions but the combination of advice I
have received has been very helpful.
Baby now going to the breast 7- 8x/day plus getting some EBM and formula in
bottles (mom's choice) . Actually, baby getting too much Supplement!! They
thought she had reflux because she was spitting up so much. Turns out baby
gained 11oz. in 7 days! Baby weighs 8lbs 13oz. now so needs about 23.9 oz
milk in 24hrs. I have now talked to mom about really analyzing her feeding
diary so that she doesn't overfeed with supplements. Really encouraging mom
to bf more frequently but her supply is still low at night. The encouraging
news is that last week she could pump 1/2 oz. at 5 pm and now she can pump 1
1/2 oz. at 5pm. She is hopeful of this progress. I have found out that people
with Lupus are subject to bouts of anemia when the Lupus 'flares-up'
unfortunately mom is anemic and this probably explains why her supply is
still low. Her level of fatigue has interfered with her motivation at times
but she is determined to continue to the best of her ability. We believe the
Lupus won't directly interfere with her ability to get a full supply(although
in this case early mismanagement may have compromised it permanently, only
time will tell). Last week we though t the OB would prescribe Reglan but I
was cautioned about the possiblity of depression. Also, baby is anemic (this
may be related to what is called Neonatal Lupus however, no doctor this mom
has seen has said this is the case)Anyway, OB doesn't think Reglan is
appropriate since baby is anemic. Mom tried fenugreek(said it helped) but
said it made her smell and think baby didn't like altered taste of BM. Once
mom is treated for anemia hopefully supply will increase more.It is exciting
to see things progress. One negative is mom's nipples sore and it turns out
baby has thrush (at least we know why!). That's it for now! Thanks again
everyone...
