I vividly remember picking up a newspaper and reading an op-ed column when my
oldest was three weeks old, and realizing that it was the first piece of
prose I had read since she was born. This from a woman who reads for a
living and then spends a few more hours a day reading for fun, who owns no
television, and who spent the time between contractions in that same birth --
you guessed it -- reading aloud with my husband.

But I just couldn't make my brain focus on one word after another in those
early weeks -- I just had other things occupying my mind, and, to agree more
or less with Chris Mulford, I'm not at all sure "fogginess" is the right
description of that existential absorbtion in what I had done and what I
needed to do.
