Hello all! I have done an archive search that did not give me the exact information I am seeking. I am seeing a mother and infant tomorrow, infant born in July at 23 5/7 weeks gestation. He was d/c from NICU last week. Mother has been bottle feeding ebm (and has LOTS of excess frozen milk in storage), and wants to transition baby to at-breast feedings and discontinue the physician rx "bottle of neosure". She currently feeds 4 oz q 3-4 hours ebm and gives 122ml of neosure via bottle daily. My question is: What is the rationale/evidence base for the neosure supplementation? Mom says it "bothers her baby's belly" and she does not like to feed it to him. We have set a tentative goal of establishing a more demand-feeding routine and transitioning baby to breastfeeding exclusively. I will have more information when I examine them tomorrow, but I know this is one of her top questions. I do not have access to her or her infant's health records prior to one week ago, when our local pediatrician assumed care of the infant and referred them to me. If I present good evidence, I do not think the pediatrician would be opposed to discontinuing the Neosure.
Thanks !! L
