I find that the simple open ended question "what are your feeding plans?" Or "how do you plan to feed your baby?" Elicits the best response, without implying that we feel she should choose one or the other, and sometimes her tone will suggest what the follow up question/education should be. The most common answer is "I want to *try* to breast feed". 'Great! It's best for your baby to receive only your milk, and if you need our help, we are here to help you with any or all feelings.'

That leaves the door open for her to state if she plans to supplement, which can then be addressed.

I'd she plans to formula feed, then "what have you heard, or was there anything in particular that lead you to that choice?"

Does anyone else have a rioting they use?

However, a first-time (or first time considering breastfeeding) mom will hear, "Well, if you think you want to breastfeed, we won't give baby anything to eat and you'll have to feed the baby all the time. We'll be sure you do. It won't be easy and we'll have to help you."
