I received the following note from a mom (not on Lactnet), who has some food
for thought for you to consider:

First some background. I have been using elimination communication (infant
toilet learning) with my son since he was 2 weeks old. It is basically
watching your infant for cues that he needs to pee or poop,
and then helping him do it somewhere other than in his diaper. It is
going really well, I am catching half his pees, and most of his poops so
far :)

A lot of ladies keep popping up in some of the breastfeeding forums I
frequent, complaining that their newborns are popping on and off the
breast and fussing. They are taking it to mean that there is a problem
with the breastfeeding, and are being reassured that "it's just
something newborns do, they will grow out of it"...

Now I realise that popping on and off the breast and fussing is one of
my son's signals that he needs to pee! In fact, that's pretty much the
only time he does pop on and off. Sooooo... could it be that these
fussy-at-the-breast babies are actually trying to get their Mom's
attention that they need to go, and because most mothers don't know to
look for that signal they are assuming that it is the nursing that is
the problem??? Any thoughts???
