Had a nice thing happen at work the other day. I have been chatting
privately with Heather from the U.K. about our hospital policy (I work in a
community hospital just south of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia). We ask
all our mothers at booking in clinic if they are going to breast or bottle
feed their babies. If they are going to bottle feed they have to bring in
their own bottles and formula ( as recommended by the Nursing Mothers
Association of Australia - this way the mothers already know the cost and
availability in their area and are able to get instruction on safe
preparation and mixing).
A mother who delivered over Christmas had not read the information given to
her at booking in clinic and just assumed things would be the same as when
she had her last baby 10 years ago. When she got to the ward and was told
we wouldn't be supplying her with formula, she decided to breast feed. Baby
took to the breast beautifully and was discharged home breastfeeding.
Hurray!!!
