Hi June,
Since the babies are close to term and a good size (I converted the grams to
7+ and 6.5 pounds, respectively) could they be let to feed ad lib? How are
they feeding? Are they staying awake for the 15 min feed, do they need some
sort of stimulation to keep awake? Is the feed being stopped at 15 min or do
the babies decide they have had their fill? Based on this information, it
might just be possible to let the babies feed ad lib. Breast compression
could be used. Possibly they would need to be awakened for feeds if they are
sleeping long periods of time. If the feeds are going pretty well, then mom
might not need to pump at all. Sometimes, especially if one or both babies
are feeding poorly or inconsistently, the mother can do "insurance pumping"
to be sure she has human milk for the top ups that may be needed. Certainly,
if the babies are consistently needing top ups of formula, I would
definitely recommend expressing, either by hand or by pump, whichever is
most effective or preferred by the mother, so the babies can receive human
milk. Hope this helps.
