Coach Smith here. I'm the "Horse's Mouth" for this idea. Here's how to make
up a packet of "Belly Balls:"

Package up a golf ball or ping-pong ball; a "shooter" size marble; and a
regular size marble. Ping-pong balls are cheaper and lighter weight than
golf balls. Most toy stores sell marbles. The marble is about the size of a
baby's stomach on day 1; the shooter marble Day 3, and the ping pong ball
Day 10. An adult stomach is about the size of a tennis ball or a baseball
(hardball).

Someone (I think it was Cathy Holland or Barbara Hotelling) borrowed my idea
and called them "Belly Balls." Hollister picked up on the idea and made up
giveaway packets with the balls, acknowledging the source of the idea on
their packaging and referencing my book.

I keep a container of different size polished stones on my desk to
illustrate this concept. When I travel, I carry a few different size stones
in a 2 oz plastic cup with a lid, which also illustrates the ~2 oz average
intake of Breastmilk at a feed in the first 6 months.

In Toronto, a health group developed a nifty magnet showing infant stomach
capacities compared with common foods: the baby's stomach on day 1-2 is
about the size of a cooked chick pea (hazelnut); day 3-6 is about the size
of a cherry or teaspoon, and day 7-10 is about the size of a walnut or
tablespoon.

I published instructions for the full game in "Coach's Notebook: Games and
Strategies for Lactation Education." Disclaimer: I receive royalties from
sales of "Coach's Notebook."

Subject: belly balls-how do I get??

Hi there,
I guess I missed the best part of ILCA!! Is there someway to get these
'balls' after ILCA?? I tried googling them and no luck...mostly belly
button ornamentation!! I've used the illustrated representation of the
infant stomach capacity, but agree these balls really could be helpful to
complete the image.

thanks,
lucy,WI
