Hi Penny
None of the recommendations about breastfeeding (in Australia or elsewhere)
cite Lyme Disease as a contraindication. Even if the mother has active
infection, I am guessing that a spirochete is too big to cross into human
milk and if it did it would be killed by the infant's stomach acid. In any
case, I am assuming that this mother has undergone appropriate antibiotic
treatment and is now left with the reasonably common ongoing autoimmune
syndrome that seems to follow Lyme, once the spirochete has been eradicated.
If the mum (she is in Australia so she's not a mOm any more) wants some
local support, please feel free to give her my email address and I'll find
her some.
Cheers
Nina

Subject: Re: [LACTNET] Lymes Disease and breastfeeding

Hi,

Can anyone shed light on the above? I am posting for someone in Australia,
with permission.
Mom in Lymes positive and breastfeeding a 5 week old infant. Her lymes rash
is reappearing. Does anyone know of research regarding whether it is safe
for her to continue feeding or not?

Grateful for any infomation I can pass on.
