Barbara,
I agree that for some babies nipple confusion doesn't seem to be a
problem and saying no pacifier no bottle to all parents made me a "nipple
nazi" so after a while I narrowed it down to the "high risk" babies. These
are the ones who have not yet breastfed or are having problems or have moms
with inverted/flat nipples. I use either a cup or syringe to feed and show
mom and dad how to do this also. You are right in saying that some parents
will perceive this as too hard and quit breastfeeding but who's to say that
they weren't also the ones who would have quit without this intervention.
If the babies/parents aren't having a problem with breastfeeding, I
personally don't have a problem with pacifiers - I don't think they are
evil. Of course the parents need to be cautioned not to use it in place of
love and intimate interaction.
                        Debbie
