Hi Jennifer- while it is true that some toddlers nurse
only at night, many others nurse, well, whenever they
feel like it. Often they like to touch base quickly
with mom and have a sip. Sometimes they see their
baby sibling or playmate nurse and need to stop for a
quick nurse.

Jealousy is an issue that I have not heard mentioned
in discussions of tandem nursing. Many mothers
believe their children are closer and have less
rivalry because of their shared time nursing.]

The negatives for me were that it was difficult for my
older child to position herself at the breast,
especially when nursing her baby sister to bed. That
improved when my second daughter was bigger and had
more muscle control. Many mothers, myself included,
found that it was just *more fun* to nurse the little
one than the older one. Many of us find it difficult
to cope with the differing nursing styles, and since
nursing is the means by which we relate to our
newborns, it makes sense to enjoy that more. (at
least physically.) Most women say that the reason
they still nurse an older child is because the child
still needs it. (of course that is why we nurse the
little one too..... hmmm....)

Research in diverse fields provides evidence that the collectivegeneral approaches that we call "attachment parenting" today are just a collection of good survival techniques biologically speaking--and have been so for countless generations. -Cynthia Good Mojab
