Public Health director Doctor Timaima Tuiketei urged health workers to
maintain strict policy on breastfeeding in hospitals because it was the best
immunisation for infants.
She made the comments while declaring the Levuka Sub-divisional Hospital on
Ovalau the 17th Baby Friendly hospital in Fiji yesterday.
"The objective of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding for the first
six months can save millions of lives," she said.
"Indeed, in line with highlighting the importance of immunisation,
breastfeeding is the first immunisation and a natural and cost-free vaccine
given to a newborn everyday.
Dr Tuiketei said while breastfeeding had many benefits, this year, the focus
and emphasis would be on timing and duration.
"We must ensure there is no obstacle at the time of delivery that would
prevent this important event from occurring.
"Since 98 per cent of our births occur in a health facilities, the
responsibility falls on us as health workers nurses, dieticians and doctors
to ensure this right of the newborn is not deprived," she said.
Dr Tuiketei said breastfeeding had been proven quite effective in the total
well-being and good health of millions of children world-wide and known as a
natural medicine against some of the world's top baby killers like polio,
malnutrition, tetanus, whooping cough and measles.
