Dear Carol, I don't see how those numbers are going to work. Except to say that if you were in my area, many or most of the women who have problems would quit breastfeeding without seeing anyone for help. They would go to bottles very easily. And I think these kind of numbers are why hospital staff in general are rushed and don't have time to give focused help to individual mothers.

I spent two and a half hours helping a mom with a premie just home today.

Personally, I refer moms to other LCs and to LLL all the time. I feel they need these other resources. I don't know why other LCs don't do this. Perhaps it is too time consuming for them and they have to cut corners somewhere? Perhaps they don't want to work with anyone else (be a one woman show)? I will say that I am selective in who I refer moms to -- I don't refer to those LCs who are low skilled or unprofessional.

Your other example is very typical of why telephone helping doesn't always work. But some moms that is all they will do, they won't do in person.
