Maybe have dad explain to mother that she doesn't have to hold the baby 
exactly the way they showed her in the hospital.
Sometimes in cross cultural situations I have explained that Americans are 
dumb when it comes to breastfeeding, even (gasp) nurses and drs.  She can 
see for herself that baby latched and sucked while reclining.  Maybe she was 
worried about his nose (could suffocate!!) Have dad explain that baby 
wouln't stay there latched on and sucking if baby couldn't breathe. Then 
maybe dad could get her to recline and try TtS again.

 It's so hard when they have a picture in their mind of the RIGHT way to 
breastfeed.  It's also difficult when you have to explain thru a translator.
