Dear all
I have a mum who has us all stumped - any advise would be gratefully
received. She is a primip, bub is a bit over 4 weeks old. Apparantly seemed
to be feeding well for first couple of weeks then mum developed mastitis for
which she was treated. Unfortunately the bub started demanding feeds 2
hourly, so mum went to settling school. Their advise was to feed strictly 4
hourly and settle in between - (I was incredulous!) Baby very unhappy!
Anyway, We saw her for the first time last 3 days ago. She said her left
breast had become engorged over the previous 3 or 4 days, the baby had lost
nearly 100 gms in 5 days. The whole breast is involved, inflamed almost to
the chest wall. The baby had an obvious tongue tie which I organised to be
snipped the next day following admission to hospital for IV antibiotics.
Our problem is the left breast. It is solid - I cannot palpate anything let
alone express. The nipple is sitting like a cherry on top of a pudding (if
you can picture that) We have tried much massage, heat, cold, different
pumps, the baby etc to absolutely no avail bar a few drops. The baby was
feeding a bit better yesterday following the snip but still unable to latch
on the left side.
What else could we do for this mum - I am beginning to despair for this
breast. Oh She has also had 2 treatments of accupunture with no result
either. She had an ultrasound yesterday, but don't know the results.
Gratefully yours
Jenni
