Jo-Anne, the number one reason I get from multips for choosing not to
breast feed, is a prior negative experience. "I wasn't ever able to get
the hang of it...I had a lot of trouble last time...I was a total
failure...I didn't make enough milk." I find that it is really difficult
to convince someone to do something that is made her miserable in the
past and had a negative impact on her self esteem. Seems like the good
word on BF is out to primips and honestly, I have found most are willing
to give it a shot.... I think the failure is largely on the part of the
system. In VT, there are a number of follow up programs for parenting
in general and well baby visits etc, but the same emphasis does not seem
to be placed on BF support. Wouldn't it be wonderful if LC's were
routinely sent for follow up visits? Even with all the scientific
information available to me, I may have given up BF if it had not been
for the wonderful support I was given by our LC's. I might add that
since I have a professional relationship with them, I was probably more
apt to call with questions and for encouragement...and call I did.
