My Mom told me that a very large a scary nurse stood over new mothers
making sure they were "doing their duty" and nursed. Mothers stayed 2 weeks
in the hospital. I think that played its role too. My Mom nursed me until I
was almost 4, of course that was in addition to solids. My Grandmother
"only" nursed my Mom to the age of 2, because she went back to school. And
even now, at the age of 94, she feels guilty because she stopped nursing so
early.
