I, personally, was placed on an anti-narcolepsy medication after I had already weaned my youngest child from breastfeeding. The name of the medication is Provigil. I just looked in Hale's book & it is listed a L4 Risk Category. My placement on this medication was necessarily due to narcolepsy but from chronic fatigue syndrome secondary to two autoimmune disorders that cause chronic fatigue. So, I would ask if she truly has narcolepsy & not an underlying autoimmune disorder that could potentially affect her milk supply. Regarding safety during the activities mentioned, if she has been diagnosed with narcolepsy she shouldn't be driving....period. With regards to safety with the baby, I would just recommend like we do with most post-partum moms, sleep when your baby sleeps, maintain good nutrition, etc. that will help promote more periods of alertness/wakefulness. If she has narcolepsy with sudden bouts of uncontrollable sleep, then I would think that she shouldn't be alone with the baby and advise her to look at potential people in her family or friends network that could be her support network.

Sincerely,

Mindy Glenn, RN, CLC, CPST
