Ann,
Are they blaming this on the breastfeeding? This seems unlikely. Sometimes
babies who are not 'really' breastfeeding lead the mother to involution and
high sodium milk. The babies also become hypernatremic and experience
dehydration. I have never seen this nor heard of this in a 40 hr old infant.
What was the birth weight and the d/c weight? Did you observe any feedings?
How often and of what duration was baby bf in those 40 hrs? Is the mother or
baby on any medication? Did the mother or anyone else give 'any' formula and
how was it prepared? Is the baby being worked up for metabolic disorders
which seems the most likely scenario. Keep us posted and of course keep
mother expressing.
