Friends,

A couple of years ago when Dr. Hale spoke to our neonatology dept we asked
how attending were dealing with the following scenario: Infant of premie or
immunocompromised baby in the nicu. mom rubella non-immune. Do you give the
injection or wait until the baby is healthy/near term? This had never been
brought up before but since then we have asked the ob's to give the injection
at the 6 week checkup. Since we are dealing with meds in general again, we
are relooking at this issue. Interestingly Tom gave it a Lactation risk
catagory 2, and said it shouldn't pose a problem to fullterm healthy babies.
He did not qualify this in any way. His citations indicated that while in
one child it was cultured in the throat, there were no serious clinical
sequela. One attending asked me to go on lactnet and find out if anyone is
delaying rubella given to a mom with a premie. Could you respond to me
privately as well as here, and indicate what level nursery you work with?
Thanks so much.
Chris
