The term "blue john" reminded me of when I first moved here to the south,
and a mother said she had "the weed." I had never heard that term, but I
think it refers to a plugged duct (I am having great difficulty describing
this) in which the majority of the fluid has become readsorbed, and a
cheesy substance remains. If this is extracted, it has a stringy
appearance, hence, called "the weed." Mothers with a plugged duct or
mastitis would say they had "the weed." Another term that I had never
heard before coming here was "clabbered." Mothers would say their milk
was "clabbered," meaning it was spoiled. They would especially use this
term to describe their milk if it was pumped and had separated.
