"I wonder if there are any among us on Lactnet who have worked with moms of
limited intelligence? This concept--of reducing information to it's
simplest form--would be helpful."

For us it's not so much limited intelligence as it is limited or no
education. The majority of our moms are immigrant Hispanics who, if they
were lucky, made it half way through grade school. It's like you can tell
their education level by how they 'sign' their documents:
script signature, clearly printed name, awkwardly printed name, asking
someone else to put their name down while mom spells it, making a clear
"X", making an awkward "X".

If I'm properly informed, grade school in Mexico (to 6th or 8th?) is free.
Secondary or high school requires tuition that poor people can't afford and
may consider irrelevant for girls who are considered women or ready for
'courting' at age 15.

Most of these women can express their thoughts and questions clearly, and
want information on baby care. There are often older adult women as part of
their extended family to help mom with her new baby. But their knowledge
and experience usually overrides our instruction on breastfeeding.

Will be glad to post the results of our "10 phrases" when we're finished
cussing/discussing them - and they've been edited by our Manager.

Phyllis
