The idea of raising the issue of toxins in human milk to expectant 
parents is akin to raising the issue of toxins in the placenta and the 
mother's blood supply. The reason we consider the former and not the 
latter is that so far human gestation is considered essential, while 
feeding at the breast is considered an option. I have no doubt that 
once an artificial alternative for human gestation is found, then there 
will be no hesitation to discuss the risks of human gestation. Babies 
are exposed to far greater levels of toxins during gestation than 
during breastfeeding. What is even more significant is that human 
beings are exposed to toxins at all levels of growth, development and 
function because we live in a toxic world. This is not a question of 
whether or not to breastfeed, as pharmaceutical companies would like us 
to believe--it is a question of what to do to survive on this planet. 
It's easy to get distracted by the smoke and miss the blazing inferno 
behind it.
