The idea of raising the issue of toxins in human milk to expectant
parents is akin to raising the issue of toxins in the placenta and the
mother's blood supply. The reason we consider the former and not the
latter is that so far human gestation is considered essential, while
feeding at the breast is considered an option. I have no doubt that
once an artificial alternative for human gestation is found, then there
will be no hesitation to discuss the risks of human gestation. Babies
are exposed to far greater levels of toxins during gestation than
during breastfeeding. What is even more significant is that human
beings are exposed to toxins at all levels of growth, development and
function because we live in a toxic world. This is not a question of
whether or not to breastfeed, as pharmaceutical companies would like us
to believe--it is a question of what to do to survive on this planet.
It's easy to get distracted by the smoke and miss the blazing inferno
behind it.
