The research only applies to IDDMs and not mums with gest diabeties. The
research I have read says there is only a delay of around 24 hours.

Arthur, Kent & Hartmann. 1994. Metabolites of lactose synthesis in milk from
diabetic and non diabetic women during lactognesis II. Journal of paediatric
gastroenterology and nutrition. 19;100-108.

One possible hypothesis for delay in intiation in IDDMs may be related to a
low milk glucose initially following birth (?perhaps due to insulin
admisistration occuring during labour and birth) as a certain milk glucose
threshold (>.3mM) appears necessary to obtain the high rate of lactose
synthesis required for initiation. Although this may be a factor, it is
perhaps more complicated than this.
