Dear Beth,

You wrote a very comprehensive post about the mom with breast pain post
nursing, and have covered all the bases quite well. So, welcome to Lactnet posting
and good luck with exam results you alluded to in your signature.

What might well be the cause of mom's intermittent breast pain is vasospasm,
which can occur without Raynaud's typical color changes, tho I've often seen
the nipple face blanching (white). She could try wearing wool breast pads as
several moms I've worked with have found these to be very helpful.
Would check her pumping technique and flange size, as well since this might
be the source of her pain. Also, past nipple damage can cause vasospasm to
occur long after the damage heals. Homeopathic hypernicum (for nerve pain) might
help, too.

Your reflection on her positioning for breastfeeding and possible strain
could be something to rule out, too. I find that in cases like yours, it
sometimes just takes a r/o (rule out) approach, working on one possible cause at a
time and discovering which intervention for individual problem works.

bra to show me her nipples and within a minute of covering up again she had an
episode"
