Just returned from a workshop on eating disorders and pregnancy. Its
incredible, really, what the scientific community is learning about
disordered eating vs. dieting. The current research seems to support that
this kind of dieting (like the Atkins diet) which eliminates whole food
groups, or categories of foods, falls on a continuum that would be, in its
worst form Anorexia Nervosa or Bulemia.

The prevalence of eating disorders in women of childbearing age is
apparently skyrocketing. Much of this seems to be related to second
generation bulemia and or restriction.

I'd love to see someone embrace this issue as it relates to breastfeeding!
My sense is that alot of early breastfeeding failure is related to the need
of these women to weigh and measure every calorie..... even for their
babies. I have noticed that in women who don't gain during pregnancy (one
of the red flags for eating disorder in pregnancy).... breastfeeding is
very difficult due to this sort of compulsion. Has anyone else noticed
this?

I refer you to this web site:

www.afterthediet.com

for information on eating disorders and what kinds of behaviors are a
symptom of one. At this workshop I was given a very nice self screening
tool, that came form "After the Diet". It lists 14 behaviors that can be
indicators of disordered eating during pregnancy. One of them is "I am
planning not to breastfeed because that way I can increase my caffeine
intake and use diet pills to lose extra weight without harming my baby"
another is "I am following a high protein, low carb diet because it might
help me minimize pregnancy weight gain."

I really wish I'd have had this list for my years as an LC! I think I could
have helped a few more women along the way.

Susan
