Dear Friends:
    When my oldest daughter was 18 months old, I went to work in a day-care
center. I was allowed to bring her and she could nurse whenever she wanted.
Nobody else was nursing and the other toddlers had bottles. Vanessa wanted a
bottle also, and found one that someone had abandoned. She never sucked on it; she
dragged it around by the teat, like a toy on a leash. However, having one was
enough to make her feel like the other children.
    I don't like that bottles are used as a symbol of infancy; however, after
2 generations and more, where bottle-feeding is the norm in the USA, it will
be a difficult symbol to vanquish.
    What symbols of babyhood could we make? Not a pacifier nor a crib! How
about a carseat? Or a little icon of a baby? Maybe if some clever person
designed such a symbol, if we made a national contest out of it, as was done when the
international wheelchair symbol was created, a solution will emerge.
