I have been at two separate births in the past month at two different
hospitals. One is "Baby FRIENDLY" designated and the other is trying for it. Both
tried to give formula to a newborn within 2 hours of birth because of low
blood sugar in a 9lbs+ baby. Neither hospital suggested nursing first, though
since I was there, both were nursed first. The first case, the mom wound up
giving formula afterwards because they would not stop harrassing her about it
and the baby was in the nursery for "after birth" care. I was basically in shock
when we had to fight to have them let mom nurse the baby first in this last
case, but since grandma and I stood our ground, the little one was finally
taken to his mother. Can anyone tell me how they have successfully educated or
helped to create policy in this type of situation?

Thank you,
Shannon Mitchell
